KNOW YOUR STATE’S SAFE DIGGING LAWS
Calling 811 before you dig is the law, but each state has different regulations. Check your state’s laws here before you dig.
If you’re digging in Maryland, Delaware or Washington, D.C., you are required to call 811 at least two (2) full business days ahead of time. In these states, 811 connects you to Miss Utility. Though Miss Utility does not physically mark lines, they do relay digging and excavation requests to their utility members, including local gas and propane companies.
To call, simply dial 811. You may also reach Miss Utility at 1-800-257-7777 (MD Western Shore), 1-800-441-8355 (MD Eastern Shore) or 1-800-282-8555 (DE).
Plus! You can now submit digging requests online. Visit www.missutility.net/itic (excavators) or www.missutility.net/iticlite (homeowners).
All Virginia digging requests must be called in to 811 at least three (3) working days (excluding weekends and legal holidays) before the project begins. Calling 811 connects you to Virginia 811 (VA 811). Though VA 811 does not physically mark lines, they do relay digging and excavation requests to your local gas and propane providers and other utility companies on your behalf.
To call, simply dial 811 or 1-800-522-7001. Professional excavators ONLY may submit requests online at www.Va811.com.
